If you have signs of stress or low mood that do not go away after a few weeks, it’s important to talk to someone about it. We have successful programmes to help people experiencing mental distress.

How we can help

We all experience stress and challenges in our lives, which can make us feel helpless, sad, worried or angry, interfere with our normal sleeping and eating habits, make us lose interest in friends, family and our favourite activities and can have other negative effects on our wellbeing.

If you have signs of stress that do not go away after a few weeks, it’s important to talk to someone about it.  

Support from your Local Doctors clinic

Our GPs can give you advice and support about how to manage your stress and challenges. You may be prescribed medication to help relieve some of your symptoms, and you might also be referred to a therapist for some funded counselling sessions.

We also run group programmes and, if you are struggling with social or financial issues, you may be referred to support from a community support worker. 

The Wellness Support Team

If your doctor or nurse thinks you would benefit, they may recommend that you engage with our Wellness Support Team. 

The team provides funded psychiatry assessments/medication reviews, therapy packages, brief wellness advisor consults, health coaches and group programmes to help with mental and or physical health problems. It can provide tools and resources to help you learn to manage your stress, difficult challenges and emotions. 

The Wellness Support Team is led by well-known and respected consultant psychiatrist Dr David Codyre, who has spent many years leading the development of effective mental health programmes in general practices.

The team has a range of psychologists and therapists who are able to offer support to children, adolescents, adults, couples and families across Auckland.

Aotearoa Mindfulness and Awareness Programme

Take a deeper look at coping and healing with our mindfulness meditation-based wellness course. AMA combines the ancient wisdom of mindfulness meditation practices and Te Ao Māori with teachings from psychology and neuroscience. More than 40 years of clinical research suggests mindfulness meditation can help you and your whānau: 

  • harness the power of the mind-body connection for balance, increased relaxation and wellbeing
  • respond wisely to challenging thoughts, emotions, reactions and behaviours
  • grow in self-awareness, self-compassion and resilience 
  • improve communication and connection with others
  • reduce stress and increase satisfaction at work and at home
  • cope effectively with chronic pain, illness and sleep difficulties 

AMA is a 6 week course, offered for 2.5 hours per week, held during the day and in the evening across Auckland. AMA is also offered via Zoom and in Hindi language. 

AMA is led by qualified instructors, and is based in the international gold standard, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) programmes.

Self-management Education Programme

Manage Better is a peer-led self-management course for anyone who has a long-term condition or is a caregiver for someone with a long-term condition such as diabetes, depression, chronic pain, heart disease, asthma or anxiety.

You will learn self-management techniques ‒ from someone who has been on the same journey as you ‒ such as planning, healthy eating and exercising, sleeping, working with healthcare providers, problem solving and decision making to help manage your health condition. 

Courses are held in English, Hindi and Tongan. We also offer a kaupapa Māori course.

  • Some clinics have ample parking, while others not so much. Please visit your nearest clinic’s page to find out more. We’ll also let you know if a clinic is close to public transport.

  • Most people in this country have to wait to see their doctor! That’s because people have different health needs and how long it takes to get the right help can be very unpredictable. It’s our long-held philosophy that you should be able to see a doctor on the day you need to – and not have to wait for days.

    The most seriously ill people are seen first. The really good news is that you can now see on the clinic website pages what the expected wait time is at that clinic! That means you can find another clinic near to you with a shorter wait time, if need be, or choose to come another day.

  • ManageMyHealth is a secure website that can receive your health information from your doctor’s system. You can use it to store other health information, too, such as other treatments you have received or other medications that you may be taking. This means you can access your personal health information from any device at anytime, anywhere in the world. If your clinic takes appointment bookings you can do this through ManageMyHealth as well as order repeat prescriptions. Your online Personal Health Record can be made up of:

    • Consultation notes
    • Laboratory results
    • Prescriptions
    • Immunisations
    • Allergies
    • Diagnoses
    • Recalls.

    Just ask the receptionist at your local clinic to sign you up to ManageMyHealth.

  • When you have a blood test, or any other kind of test, your results will be sent to your clinic. If the results are normal, you will not be notified. If they are not normal, the clinic will phone you and discuss next steps. If you have a ManageMyHealth patient portal, you can find your results in there, once your doctor has reviewed and filed them. Or, if after two or three days, you are concerned about your results, you can call the clinic to find out.

  • If you have a ManageMyHealth patient portal, you can order a repeat prescription online, otherwise please visit your clinic’s page and phone them.
